Udaipur. The lake city does romance as a full-time job. Take the evening boat ride on Lake Pichola, watch the City Palace turn gold at dusk, and book dinner at Ambrai, the lakeside restaurant across the water with the best seat in town. Jodhpur. Few moments match the ramparts of Mehrangarh Fort at sunset, the entire blue old city laid out below you like a quilt. Watch it together with a cup of chai in hand, then wander the lanes that give the city its nickname.

Jaisalmer. Add this if you can steal two extra days. A Sample 5-Day Honeymoon Route

Five days is our recommended minimum — enough for the three romantic cities without turning the trip into a commute. Here is the shape of it, always by private cab.

• Day 1 — Jaipur: arrive, check into a heritage hotel, and let your first evening be a rooftop dinner above the old city's lights.
• Day 2 — Jaipur: Amer Fort early, Hawa Mahal at golden hour, the bazaars in between. An easy, photogenic day.
• Day 3 — Jodhpur: a five-and-a-half-hour drive west. Arrive in time for sunset from the Mehrangarh ramparts — the blue city at dusk is the money shot.
• Day 4 — Udaipur: another long drive south, timed so you check in early enough for the evening boat on Lake Pichola.
• Day 5 — Udaipur: the City Palace complex and old city in the morning, a lazy lakeside lunch, and an evening flight home.
